Kay Crosse: Foundation Governor/Chair of Governors
I have a Master’s degree in early years’ education together with qualified teacher status. Early in my teaching career I gained primary school experience teaching In St. Joseph’s school in Newbury, Berkshire. I enjoyed working in a church school valuing the special atmosphere and firm values very often found in a faith based school.
I have had a wide range of teaching experience from nursery school education to further and higher education. My last employed position was as Principal of Norland College where I was responsible for the successful management of the relocation of the College from Hungerford to Bath where the College is now located. In addition for overall responsibility for student training, finance and buildings, I was also responsible for the onsite nurseries, pre prep school, children’s hotel and the out of school and holiday clubs. Norland also has an employment agency placing Norlanders with families all over the world.
About eighteen months ago my husband and I moved from Newbury to Newquay. I have enjoyed exploring the beautiful coast and trying new activities such as paddle boarding and deep sea fishing. I also enjoy swimming, running and tennis. My five grandchildren Charlotte, Emily, Elizabeth, Sebastian and Alexander visit us frequently and particularly enjoy crabbing with huge success!!
Jo Roberts - Senior Teacher - Foundation Governor
I have been a staff member at The Bishops’ for over seventeen years in various roles, and have worked across the school. Before becoming the Senior Teacher eighteen months ago I was the Year 2 class teacher, and have been privileged to see the progress and development of many cohorts of children. As the Senior Teacher my role is to work within the management team to support teaching and learning in all areas. I also have particular responsibilities for English and Assessment, and am the Key Stage One Coordinator. As a Foundation Governor I believe that it is important to nurture the Christian Values which are integral to our school, and am highly motivated to support children and adults working together to ensure the best outcomes for the young people of our community.
Sharon Redman: Associate Governor/Finance and Personnel/Business Manager
I have been involved with the school for the last 10 years firstly as a Foundation Governor and then Chair. I resigned in March 2015 as I was appointed the School Business Manager. I have lived in Newquay since 2002 having moved from London, both my children, Hannah and Katie attended The Bishops' and thoroughly enjoyed their experience here. I ensure that the school logisitics and operations run smoothly which covers many aspects and because of my passion for the school I will always have the teachers, governors and more importantly the children at heart.
Jem Thorold (Rev'd Jem) - Foundation Governor
I have been in Newquay since September 2016 having lived in Cornwall for 10 years and am delighted to be a Governor of The Bishops' School. I would like to build on the already excellent relationship enjoyed between the school and the church, seeking an opportunity to be seen in school and welcoming children, their families, staff and governors to St Michael's Church, but especially also to share in the prayer life and worship at school.
I am married to Sue with three adult children living 'up country', so far we have amassed 2 grandchildren.
Mark Turner - Parent Governor
I am 44 years old and a besotted father and husband. I moved to Cornwall eight years ago following a successful application to join the teaching team at Cornwall College in St Austell. I have a fifteen year background in Further Education and over twenty years sports coaching experience following a brief but enjoyable spell playing professional football. I strongly believe in an education system that encourages independent, purposeful learning led by forward thinking senior managers. I offered my time and experiences to the school to show my support for the teachers and management team who are working in an incredibly tough environment and, in my opinion, doing a fantastic job.
My current interests have been forged by my wife’s love of Surf Life Saving. I hold a committee role at Newquay Surf Life Saving Club and have been employed full time by Surf Life Saving GB as their Programme Development Officer for just over twelve months. I have also run my own Futsal business here in mid Cornwall and I am proud of my efforts in offering futsal to many youth and adult players, male and female.
I enjoy being outside and active and try to set an example that my son will appreciate but this will probably be when he is much older and missing the cold walks in the Cornish mizzle. Keeping fit and healthy is a habit forged in my younger years and a habit I wish to keep for many more years.
Joe Sharples - Parent Governor
I am 67 years of age and have been married to my wife Barbara for 46 years. I have two grown up daughters, one of whom has two children currently attending Bishop’s, with a further child to start next year.
My working life was spent in executive distribution management and in later years, running the European distribution operation for a major American multi-national industrial gas and chemicals company.
Since retiring I spent my time in property development in Cheshire prior to moving to Cornwall in 2009 and building our current house in Talland Bay. During this time, I was a trustee/ secretary of an international children’s charity based in Chichester. I travelled to Romania to help with the development of a number of apartments purchased as part of a project to support children from leaving the orphanages to obtaining work and being able to support themselves.
Once living in Cornwall, I joined the PCC for our local church in Talland and became treasurer, helping to ensure that we can keep the church open for the benefit of the community.
I believe passionately that children require a spiritual and moral compass and that home and school together can help them develop strong characters and values to equip them for the future.
Jo Harrison - Parent Governor
